save the last rain dance for me

a city that is wet soon becomes
like any other as individual
characteristics start to fade
in the rain, the semaphore born of
umbrella bearers a common language
across the planet, around the world
so that (sans deceptive exceptions)
concrete and steel dissolve
into blurred vision/soft focus
while a city’s damp citizenry are
interchangeable with any similar
population from Madrid to Malay
as leaden clouds bring a uniform gray
to skylines and sidewalks but also
after the most cosmopolitan of fashions
shower upon us the gift of global unity.
