Photographs, like honeycomb
Cells capture sweet memories
Of static moments
Too fleeting to be digested
At the time of composure
A stolen glimpse of carefree
Indolence with friends
Or family gatherings
Around age celebrations or
Announcements of magnitude
Some milestone achieved
And happy, smiling faces
Making a show of bravery
Come what may
Secure in the knowledge that
Tomorrow never, ever will be
A mere facsimile of today.

I always think of poems as capturing a moment too – nice work.
June 16th, 2013 at 11:59 am
Thank you. Yes, poems can sometimes act as a type of Polaroid, while also capturing the mood/soul of a moment, I agree!
June 20th, 2013 at 12:34 am
I agree with you both: I think with words, you can capture beyond just the exact moment; you can capture whatever it is you want to impose upon that moment. This beautiful poem summons up purely unique images that can’t be described by anything else besides the words written on the page. Amazing work Lorem Ipsum, I look forward to reading more of your work!
It’d be great if you could check out my poem on nostalgia and past moments present:
Cheers,
Jon

Poems as polaroids, a nice turn of phrase!

Wonderful use of beautiful words! I personally like using poems, words and cameras to capture now and the past! Right?

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the poem!

The beauty of photographs is that they are Carpe Diem! Our eyes are the lenses we need to learn to use more skillfully and truly observe and see what they world around us as to offer us on a dialy basis. Enjoyed your poem.
June 17th, 2013 at 11:25 pm
Yes, I like that idea of the camera really seizing the day/moment, on our behalf. And I also agree we can be quite blind to everything around us—blinkered even. I’m happy you enjoyed the poem, too! Thanks.

This poem makes me want to get out my photo albums and flick through the memories that were “Too fleeting to be digested, At the time of composure”, but that I could appreciate better now..
June 17th, 2013 at 11:31 pm
There’s definitely something to be said, for spending an afternoon poring over old photo albums. But I must confess, though, that the photos I was looking at, while I wrote this poem, were a haphazard collection of photos stuck all over the fridge door! Thanks, for commenting and stopping by!
June 18th, 2013 at 7:15 am
I can certainly see that fridge door now you mention it! A good poem always evokes something new in every reader so I commend you for that!
June 18th, 2013 at 8:19 am
I’ll take commendation over condemnation, any time! Thanks, again, for your comments, they’re much appreciated!

*sigh* thanks for this unique moment of reading your words

Thanks! Although just let me say, next time Michele Obama gets in your way, tell her to shove off… 😉 I’m glad you experienced a unique moment reading my words, and I look forward to reading some more of yours presently, too!

In pictures, the past does seem perfect. The zeal of the humans to capture time and freeze it in a couple of inches is ever growing and insatiable.
beautifully spun poem (I think I will remember your composition every time am smiling into the camera). congratulations on being freshly pressed.

I’m a huge nerd of words and I had to tell you first and foremost that I adore the pun on verb tenses in the title–it works perfectly–lovely poetry.

Yes, and I think you’re the first to get the pun, too! You’ve made my day! Thanks, so much. Cheers!

“Photographs, like honeycomb
Cells capture sweet memories
Of static moments”
This puzzled me. Don’t photographs capture memories of dynamic moments? I mean, the memories are static, because they’re in photo form. But the actual moment that the photo is capturing is dynamic, no?
It’s only the photograph afterward that is static. Or maybe I’m reading it wrong.
Either way, nice poem. I hardly pay attention to poems on WordPress, but this one is actually decent.
Good job.
June 19th, 2013 at 11:53 pm
First of all, let me say thank you, for your question and supportive comments, more widely. It’s great to know my poem has provoked a bit of debate.
There are seemingly a number of unresolved contradictions, within the poem, I agree. Frustratingly, though, in order to explore/explain them will take many more words than are contained in the poem itself. Hence, I suppose, that’s why I like to express ideas with poetry to begin with.
Ultimately, the poem deals with the illusory quality of both time and perfection, both being abstract concepts, after all, that we purport to observe in the course of our daily physical existence.
In order for me to give a more detailed answer, though, we’re going to have to enter the metaphysical realm and discuss the philosophical nature of time. If, for instance, you were to infinitely dilate time, I believe, our lives would look like a, seemingly, infinite number of static moments strung together. And so, within that split micro-second that a camera does its thing, we are seeing one such moment of virtual stasis.
On a more mundane level the moment a photograph is taken can also be called “static”, because everyone in the photo is told to “freeze and hold that pose”.
Hope this helps! And thanks, again, for commenting.

such a beautiful poem, it also made me think about my recent weekend with family, which also was beautiful. BTW the hay has been rolled 😉
July 31st, 2013 at 4:15 am
Thank you. Yes, I just wish every poem was as easy to write as this one was! But maybe that’s why it worked so well — because I didn’t try to over-think it. Anyhow, it also sounds like you’ve been making some hay of your own, while the sun shines. I look forward to seeing the pics. Cheers!

The opening metaphor raised this reader’s left eyebrow, promoting excellent prospects for what was to follow. I was correct; the denouement bettered it. Very well executed.
